Reclaiming Our Crowns: The History & Beauty of Textured Hair

There's something sacred about Black hair. It's not just strands growing from our scalps — it's history, culture, resistance, and celebration woven together. Our hair tells stories. About where we come from. About what we've survived. About who we are. This Black History Month, we wanted to take a moment to honor that legacy. To trace the journey from ancient African civilizations to the natural hair movement of today. To acknowledge the pain of the past while celebrating the beauty of the present. Because understanding where we've been helps us appreciate where we are — and where we're going. THE ROOTS: HAIR IN AFRICAN HISTORY Long before colonization, hair held deep significance across the African continent. It was never "just hair." In many African societies, hairstyles communicated everything: age, marital status, religion, wealth, rank, and ethnic identity. The intricate braiding patterns passed down through generations weren't just beautiful — they were a language. Hair grooming was a communal practice. It was a time for bonding, storytelling, and passing down traditions. The person who styled your hair was trusted — often family or a respected community member. This was our inheritance. Hair as identity. Hair as community. Hair as art. THE RUPTURE: ERASURE AND ASSIMILATION The transatlantic slave trade didn't just steal people — it attempted to steal identity. Enslaved Africans had their heads shaved upon capture, stripping away the cultural significance their hair held. In America, the erasure continued. European beauty standards became the measure of acceptability. "Good hair" meant hair that was straighter, looser, closer to whiteness. Textured hair was labeled difficult, unruly, unprofessional. For generations, Black people — especially Black women — were taught to alter their natural texture to fit in, get jobs, be taken seriously. Chemical relaxers, hot combs, and constant manipulation became the norm. The message was clear: your natural hair is not enough. But even in the face of this pressure, resistance bloomed. THE RESISTANCE: NATURAL HAIR AS PROTEST The 1960s and 70s brought the Black Power movement — and with it, the Afro. Wearing natural hair became a political statement. A rejection of assimilation. A declaration that Black is beautiful. Angela Davis. Kathleen Cleaver. The Jackson 5. Afros became symbols of pride and resistance, challenging the dominant narrative about what was considered beautiful or acceptable. But the fight wasn't over. Discrimination continued — in workplaces, schools, and everyday life. It would take decades more for society to even begin to change. THE RENAISSANCE: THE NATURAL HAIR MOVEMENT The 2000s and 2010s brought a new wave: the natural hair movement. Fueled by social media, YouTube tutorials, and online communities, Black women began embracing their texture in unprecedented numbers. For the first time, we had access to information about our hair — from people who actually understood it. We learned about curl patterns, porosity, moisture, and ingredients. We realized our hair wasn't hard to manage — we just hadn't been given the right tools. Brands emerged that actually catered to textured hair. The conversation shifted from "fixing" to "understanding." And while there's still work to be done (the CROWN Act only passed in 2019, and still isn't law everywhere), the momentum is undeniable. We are in the middle of a reclamation. THE INHAIRITANCE: WHAT WE CARRY FORWARD At Inhairitance, our name is intentional. We believe that loving your textured hair is an inheritance — passed down from the generations who wore their crowns before us. It's your grandmother's hands parting your hair on Sunday mornings. It's the secret family recipes for hair growth. It's the pride in your mother's eyes when she sees you wearing your natural texture with confidence. We're not here to tell you how to wear your hair. We're here to help you understand it, care for it, and celebrate it — however you choose to show up. Because your texture was never the problem. And the more of us who know that, the more the world will have to accept it. This Black History Month, We're honoring the full journey. The beauty. The pain. The resistance. The joy. We're grateful for the women who came before us — who wore their hair proudly even when it cost them. Who passed down techniques and traditions and love. And we're committed to continuing that legacy. To creating products that actually work for textured hair. To building a community where every curl, coil, and kink is celebrated. Your hair is your crown. Wear it proudly. — The Inhairitance Family

Why Your Hair Journey Is Unique: Redefining Growth Beyond Length - Inhairitance Curl Spa

Why Your Hair Journey Is Unique: Redefining Growth Beyond Length

How texturism and outdated beauty standards have shaped our understanding of "healthy hair"—and why it's time to write your own story. The Problem with One-Size-Fits-All Hair Advice You've been there before: scrolling through endless tutorials promising the "secret" to long, healthy hair. Rice water rinses. Inversion methods. Products that guarantee three inches of growth in 30 days. Yet somehow, your hair journey still feels like you're swimming upstream. Here's the truth that no one talks about: long hair doesn't look the same for everyone—especially for those of us with curls and coils. The hair industry has spent decades selling us a narrow definition of "growth" and "length" that simply doesn't account for the beautiful complexity of textured hair. When your hair grows out instead of down, when shrinkage is a natural part of your hair's personality, when your curl pattern creates volume rather than visible length—traditional growth advice falls short. It's not that your hair isn't growing. It's that you've been measuring success with the wrong ruler. Why Texturism Has Hijacked Our Hair Goals Texturism—the discrimination against natural hair textures in favor of straighter hair—hasn't just affected how society sees us. It's affected how we see ourselves and our hair journeys. When "long hair" images predominantly feature straight or loosely waved textures flowing down someone's back, we unconsciously internalize that this is what healthy, growing hair should look like. But what about hair that grows into a gorgeous, voluminous cloud? Hair that shrinks to protect itself? Hair that creates stunning silhouettes rather than streams? This narrow beauty standard has made many of us question whether our hair is "growing properly" when, in reality, it's doing exactly what healthy textured hair does. The Science Your Hair Actually Needs Real hair growth isn't about miracle products or viral trends. It's about understanding the fundamentals: Your Hair Growth Cycle: Every strand goes through anagen (growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (rest) phases. Understanding where your hair is in this cycle helps you set realistic expectations and avoid the frustration of comparing your month three to someone else's year two. Internal Foundation: Your hair grows from the inside out. While external products matter, your nutrition, stress levels, and overall health create the foundation for everything that happens at your scalp. Retention vs. Growth: Many people focus solely on growth rate while ignoring retention—keeping the hair you've already grown. For textured hair especially, retention strategies often matter more than growth-boosting techniques. Individual Factors: Your genetics, lifestyle, environment, and hair care practices all influence your journey in ways that make cookie-cutter advice ineffective. Your Growth & Length Retention Checklist Ready to start supporting your hair's natural growth process? Here are the foundational elements every healthy hair journey needs: ✓ Improve your nutrition: Hair growth requires adequate protein, iron, vitamins D and B12, and omega-3 fatty acids. Your hair follicles are some of the most metabolically active cells in your body. ✓ Massage your scalp for better circulation: Just 4-5 minutes of gentle scalp massage can increase blood flow to hair follicles, potentially supporting the growth phase. ✓ Protect your ends at night: Friction from cotton pillowcases and rough movements during sleep can cause breakage that undermines months of growth. These aren't revolutionary secrets—they're evidence-based fundamentals that actually work when applied consistently to your unique hair. Beyond the Basics: What You Really Need to Know While nutrition and protection are important, the real transformation happens when you understand the deeper science behind hair growth and learn to identify what actually works for your specific hair needs. That's exactly what we're diving into this Saturday. Ready to Learn the Real Science? If you're tired of generic advice and ready to understand what your hair actually needs to grow and thrive, join us this Saturday for "It's Giving Growth"—a live masterclass where we'll dive deep into the science of hair growth, bust common myths, and help you develop realistic expectations for your unique journey. What's Really Stopping Your Hair Growth? 5 Hidden Culprits You Need to Know - Inhairitance Curl Spa

What's Really Stopping Your Hair Growth? 5 Hidden Culprits You Need to Know

It's not just about the products you're using. You've tried every growth serum on the market. You've switched shampoos three times this year. You've even started taking those expensive hair vitamins everyone's raving about. So why is your hair still not growing the way you want it to? Here's the truth: you might be sabotaging your hair growth without even realizing it. While most people focus solely on what products to use, the real barriers to healthy hair growth often lie in habits and factors we don't even think about. Today, I'm breaking down the top 5 hindrances that could be secretly stunting your hair growth—and more importantly, how to fix them. The Growth Saboteurs Hiding in Plain Sight 1. Chronic Stress: The Silent Growth Killer We all know stress is bad for us, but did you know it can literally stop your hair from growing? When you're stressed, your body produces cortisol, which can push hair follicles into a resting phase called telogen. This means your hair stops growing and may even start falling out. The Fix: Incorporate stress-reduction techniques like meditation, regular exercise, or even just 10 minutes of deep breathing daily. Your hair (and your sanity) will thank you. 2. Over-Styling: When "Cute" Becomes Costly That tight ponytail for your morning workout? Those back-to-back heat styling sessions? Every time you put excessive tension or heat on your hair, you're creating micro-damage that adds up over time. The result? Breakage that makes it seem like your hair isn't growing when it's actually breaking off as fast as it grows. The Fix: Give your hair regular breaks from tight styles and heat tools. Embrace protective styles and always use a heat protectant when styling. Your hair needs rest days just like you do. 3. Product Buildup: The Growth Blocker Think more products mean better results? Think again. When styling products, oils, and even some shampoos build up on your scalp, they can clog hair follicles and create an environment where healthy growth is nearly impossible. The Fix: Use a clarifying shampoo once a week to remove buildup. Pay attention to how your hair feels—if it's looking dull or feeling heavy, it's time for a deep cleanse. 4. Scalp Irritants: The Inflammation Trap An irritated, inflamed scalp is not a happy growing environment for your hair. Common culprits include harsh ingredients in products, overwashing, or even using water that's too hot. When your scalp is constantly fighting irritation, it can't focus on producing healthy hair. The Fix: Switch to gentler, sulfate-free products and lukewarm water for washing. If you have persistent scalp issues, consider seeing a dermatologist—your scalp health is crucial for hair growth. 5. Poor Nutrition: Starving Your Strands Your hair is essentially dead protein, but it's grown by very much alive follicles that need proper nutrition to do their job. If you're not getting enough protein, iron, vitamins D and B, or omega-3 fatty acids, your hair growth will suffer. The Fix: Focus on a balanced diet rich in lean proteins, leafy greens, nuts, and fish. If you suspect nutritional deficiencies, consider getting blood work done to identify specific needs. The Real Growth Game-Changer Here's what most people don't realize: healthy hair growth is a holistic process. It's not just about what you put on your hair—it's about your overall health, stress levels, daily habits, and yes, the products you choose. The women I work with who see the most dramatic growth improvements are those who address all these factors, not just one or two. It's like trying to fill a bucket with holes in it—if you don't patch all the holes, you'll never see the results you want. Your Hair Growth Action Plan Ready to stop sabotaging your growth and start seeing real results? Here's your step-by-step plan: Week 1-2: Assess and Cleanse Do a clarifying treatment to remove buildup Evaluate your current stress levels and styling habits Take progress photos (trust me on this one) Week 3-4: Implement Changes Reduce heat styling to 2-3 times per week maximum Start a stress-reduction practice Switch to gentler hair products if needed Month 2: Optimize Nutrition Focus on increasing protein and nutrient-rich foods Consider a consultation with a nutritionist if needed Stay consistent with your new habits Month 3+: Maintain and Monitor Track your progress with monthly photos Adjust your routine based on what's working Be patient—real growth takes time The Bottom Line Your hair growth journey isn't just about finding the right products—it's about creating the right environment for growth to happen. When you address these hidden hindrances and support your hair from the inside out, you'll finally see the length and health you've been working toward. Remember, healthy hair growth is typically about half an inch per month. If you're not seeing that kind of progress, one or more of these factors might be the culprit. Ready to Take It to the Next Level? If you're serious about maximizing your hair growth potential, we're hosting a special "It's Giving Growth" MasterClass where we'll dive even deeper into these concepts and share our proven system for accelerating healthy hair growth. The Science Behind Hair Growth - Inhairitance Curl Spa

The Science Behind Hair Growth

Is Your Hair Growth Routine Missing THIS? The Science Behind What Really Works You've tried the vitamins, the oils, the scalp massagers. Yet your hair seems stuck in an endless cycle of growing to a certain point and... stopping. Sound familiar? Despite billions spent on hair growth products, most people are working with completely wrong information about how hair actually grows. The Real Science: Your Hair's 3-Phase Cycle Your hair doesn't grow continuously like a plant. Every strand cycles through three phases: Anagen (Growth Phase): 2-7 years 85-90% of your hair is actively growing. The length of this phase determines your maximum hair length—and it's largely genetic. Catagen (Transition): 2-3 weeks Hair stops growing and detaches from blood supply. Only 1-3% of hair is in this phase. Telogen (Rest/Shed): 2-3 months Hair rests before shedding naturally. You lose 50-100 hairs daily—this is normal and healthy. Understanding these phases changes everything. You can't force growth beyond your natural rate, but you can optimize conditions for healthy cycling. Myth-Busting: What's Really Sabotaging You Myth: Miracle products dramatically speed growth Reality: Hair grows ~0.5 inches monthly regardless of products. What matters is supporting follicle health and preventing breakage. Myth: Genetics are everything Reality: While genetics set your potential, stress, nutrition, and hair practices determine if you reach it. Myth: More products = more growth Reality: Overloading can clog follicles. Your scalp needs clean, healthy conditions—not product buildup. What Actually Drives Growth The science points to four key factors: 1. Follicle Health Your follicle is a tiny factory that needs proper nutrition, blood flow, and a clean environment. Focus on scalp health, not just length. 2. Hormonal Balance Hormones like DHT can shrink follicles and shorten growth phases. This is why pregnancy, menopause, and PCOS affect hair growth. 3. Nutritional Support Follicles are metabolically active and need protein, iron, vitamins D and B12. Deficiencies can push hair into shedding phase early. 4. Length Retention Growth means nothing if you're breaking off what you've grown. Many "slow growers" actually have normal growth but poor retention. Why Your Routine Is Failing Most routines focus on the wrong things—promising to speed up a biological process with natural limits instead of optimizing conditions for that process to work effectively. If your routine is mainly topical products promising miraculous growth, you're missing the bigger picture. True optimization requires addressing follicle health, overall wellness, and length retention together. Ready to Get Strategic? Understanding the science is just the beginning. Real transformation happens when you apply these principles to your specific hair type and goals. Humidity-Proof Your Curls with These 4 Game-Changers - Inhairitance Curl Spa

Humidity-Proof Your Curls with These 4 Game-Changers

Say Goodbye to Frizz: Your Ultimate Guide to Humidity-Proof Curls with Inhairitance We all know the frustration – you style your curls perfectly in the morning, but by midday, humidity has completely changed your hair's texture and shape. If you've been searching for products that actually work against frizz and humidity, we're excited to share four game-changers from our Inhairitance collection that can be used individually or layered together for maximum protection. Understanding Humidity and Curls Let's quickly break down what's happening: humidity causes hair to absorb excess moisture from the air, which lifts the cuticle and disrupts your curl pattern. The result? Frizz and undefined curls. The solution is creating a protective barrier that maintains moisture balance while blocking excess humidity. Your Anti-Frizz Solutions Daily Curl Booster: Your Refresh Essential We designed Daily Curl Booster for those times when your curls need reviving – whether it's day two hair or after a workout. This lightweight formula reactivates your curl pattern without the need to completely restyle. Many of our customers love mixing it with water for a quick refresh spray that also provides humidity protection. It's perfect on its own for a light hold day or as a base layer when you're building your full routine. Holy Cream: The Moisture Seal Holy Cream has become a staple for so many in our curl community, and for good reason. This nourishing cream creates a protective layer around each curl while providing deep hydration. It's rich enough to moisturize thoroughly but light enough that it won't weigh down your curls. When layering products, Holy Cream comes after your curl booster but before your gel, helping to seal in moisture and maintain definition throughout the day. Hold it Right There Gel: Definition That Lasts When you need reliable hold and definition, this gel delivers without the crunch. It provides flexible hold that maintains your curl pattern even in high humidity. Once dry, you can gently scrunch to reveal soft, touchable curls that stay defined all day. Use it alone for simple styling or layer it over Holy Cream for extra moisture and protection. Mistify: The Hydration Hero Mistify is your go-to for adding moisture back into your curls anytime they need it. This oil-free botanical blend features powerhouse ingredients like Ginseng, Rose of Jericho, Green Tea, and Black Spruce Bark extract. Beyond just refreshing your curls, it offers optimal moisture retention, promotes hair growth, provides UV-protection, and even helps prolong your hair color. Think of it as your daily hydration insurance – perfect for reactivating curls or giving them a moisture boost whenever they're feeling thirsty. Making It Work for You The beauty of these products is their versatility. Use them solo when you want something simple, or layer them for those days when humidity is at its worst. A popular combination: Daily Curl Booster for initial definition, Holy Cream for moisture and protection, followed by Hold it Right There Gel for lasting hold. Keep Mistify on hand throughout the day for instant hydration whenever your curls need a pick-me-up. Each product addresses a different aspect of curl care, so you can customize your routine based on what your hair needs that day. No complicated techniques required – just products that work with your natural curl pattern. Humidity doesn't have to dictate your hair days anymore. With the right products – whether used alone or together – you can maintain beautiful, defined curls in any weather. Which product speaks to your curl needs? Let us know in the comments!

5 Steps to Hydrated, Healthy Curls - Inhairitance Curl Spa

5 Steps to Hydrated, Healthy Curls

The Inhairitance Journal / Curl Care 5 Steps to Hydrated, Healthy Curls (That Actually Last) You deep condition. You layer product. And by lunchtime your curls feel like straw again. The problem usually isn't what you're using. It's the order you're using it in. ✦ ✦ ✦ Hydration is the foundation of soft, bouncy, defined curls. But it isn't a single product you buy — it's a sequence you follow. Each step here does one job, and each one depends on the step before it working properly. Skip the order and even the best formula in your cabinet has nothing to hold onto. Why Curls Lose Moisture So Fast Curly and coily hair is structurally more prone to dryness, and it has nothing to do with how well you take care of it. The bends and turns in each strand make it difficult for your scalp's natural oils to travel down the hair shaft the way they do on straight hair. The ends — the oldest, most fragile part of the strand — are the last place those oils ever reach, and often they never do. Add heat styling, hard water, dry indoor air, and a wash routine that strips more than it replaces, and you get hair that feels thirsty no matter how much product you put on it. The fix isn't more product. It's a routine that gets water in and then keeps it there. Every step below is either putting water in or stopping it from leaving. That's the whole system. Step 01 Deep Water Penetration Everything starts with a clean slate. Product buildup sits on the cuticle and physically blocks water from getting through, so no amount of conditioning will register until the strand is actually clean. Reach for: Unconditional Love Deep Conditioner Cleanse and deep condition every one to two weeks, depending on how quickly your hair takes on buildup. Unconditional Love is formulated to carry water and nutrients deep into the hair shaft rather than coating the outside of it. Pro tip For an intensive treatment, apply Unconditional Love, cover with a shower cap, and add gentle heat for twenty minutes — a hooded dryer, or a warm damp towel wrapped over the cap. Heat lifts the cuticle slightly, which is exactly what low porosity hair needs to let moisture through. Step 02 Moisturize While Styling Here's the step most people get wrong: they wait until their hair is dry to apply product. By then there's no water left to hold. Water is the moisturizer. Everything else is just there to keep it from evaporating. Reach for: Curl Butter After rinsing your deep conditioner, apply Curl Butter while your hair is damp. Not soaking, not dry — damp. This is where definition and hydration happen at the same time, and it's the difference between curls that stay soft and curls that go crunchy by hour three. Quick tip Keep a spray bottle within reach and re-dampen each section right before you work product through it. Sections dry out while you're busy with the rest of your head, and product applied to a dry section behaves completely differently than product applied to a damp one. Step 03 Rehydrate and Balance Porosity Porosity — how easily your hair absorbs moisture and how well it holds it — is the single biggest factor in whether this routine works for you. It determines how much product you need, how heavy it can be, and how often you'll need to reapply. Reach for: Daily Curl Booster Leave-In Apply using the praying hands method, focusing on mid-lengths and ends. It's lightweight enough to hydrate without weighing curls down, and it helps even out moisture retention along the strand. Stylist secret Start with your driest section, not the top of your head. That's almost always the ends and the back. By the time you work your way up, the sections that need the least product are getting exactly what's left on your hands — which is usually the right amount. Step 04 Seal the Deal This is the step most curlies skip entirely, and it's the reason hydration disappears by midday. You've spent three steps getting water into the strand. Sealing is what stops it from walking straight back out. Reach for: Moisture Lock Pomade Smooth a small amount over your hair before your styling cream or gel. It creates a barrier over the cuticle that holds everything you just layered underneath it. Stylist secret Concentrate on mid-lengths and ends. Your roots are already getting natural oil from your scalp — the ends are the part that has never seen any, and they're where split ends and breakage start. Step 05 Moisture and Volume, Together Hydrated hair has a reputation for going flat. It doesn't have to. The trick is putting your volume product where volume actually comes from — the root — rather than layering it over everything. Reach for: Holy Cream for Volume Work through in quarter-sized amounts, section by section, concentrating at the roots. Diffuse on low speed with your head tipped, and you'll get lift without trading away any of the moisture you just built. ✦ ✦ ✦ Between Wash Days The routine doesn't end when your hair dries. Curls lose moisture continuously — to dry air, to friction from your pillow, to a hood or a hat. A midweek refresh is what keeps day four looking like day one. Reach for: Mistify Curl Refresher A few spritzes reintroduce water, reactivate the products already in your hair, and knock down frizz. Scrunch gently with your fingers as you go to reshape the curl rather than smoothing it out. ✦ ✦ ✦ Hydration Is a Routine, Not a Product If you take one thing from these five steps, make it this: the order matters more than the ingredients. Sealing before you moisturize traps nothing. Applying cream to dry hair gives it no water to hold. The sequence is doing most of the work. What the sequence can't tell you is how much. That part depends on your hair, and specifically on three things: your porosity, your strand diameter, and your curl type. Low porosity hair with fine strands will drown under the same amount of butter that high porosity coils barely notice. Same five steps, very different quantities. The routine is universal. The amounts are personal. Make It Yours Answer a few questions about how your hair behaves on wash day and we'll match you to one of our twelve routines, with the products and the amounts already worked out for your combination. Twelve routines. One is yours. Take the Curl ID Quiz Not sure about your porosity? Start here →

5 Types of Dry Hair: How to Diagnose & Treat Your Specific Hair Thirst - Inhairitance Curl Spa

5 Types of Dry Hair: How to Diagnose & Treat Your Specific Hair Thirst

The Inhairitance Journal / Curl Education 5 Types of Dry Hair (And How to Tell Which One Is Yours) Not all dry hair is the same. Five different things cause it, they need five different fixes, and treating the wrong one is why the last three products you bought did nothing. ✦ ✦ ✦ Dryness is one of the most common complaints among curly and coily textures — and one of the most misdiagnosed. We tend to treat "dry" as a single condition with a single solution: buy something labelled hydrating, use more of it, hope. But dryness is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A doctor wouldn't prescribe the same medication for every fever. Your hair deserves the same specificity. Why "Ultra-Hydrating" Products Keep Letting You Down Here's the elephant in the bathroom: why does the most expensive, most raved-about moisturizing product on the shelf leave your hair exactly as thirsty as it was before? Because moisture isn't the missing ingredient. Something is blocking it, stripping it, or letting it escape — and until you know which, you're watering the leaves while the problem sits in the roots. Dry hair is a symptom. Five different things cause it. Only one of them is thirst. Type 01 Porosity-Related Dryness The signs Hair feels dry immediately after washing Products seem to sit on top of the strand rather than absorb Water beads up instead of soaking in Getting fully wet in the shower takes real effort Or the opposite: soaks instantly, dries out just as fast What's happening Low porosity hair has tightly closed cuticles that keep moisture from entering the shaft in the first place. High porosity hair has the opposite problem — too many gaps, so moisture rushes in and evaporates right back out. Both feel dry. Neither is fixed the same way. If you're low porosity Use gentle heat when deep conditioning to encourage the cuticle open Stay with lightweight, water-based formulas Go easy on heavy butters and oils, which build up on the surface Clarify regularly to clear that buildup If you're high porosity Work protein treatments in to help fill gaps along the cuticle Use heavier sealants and butters to hold moisture in Apply products to soaking wet hair, not damp Look for aloe vera and flaxseed, which temporarily smooth cuticle gaps Type 02 Environmental Dryness The signs Dryness comes and goes with the season It worsens around heating and air conditioning Hair turns brittle after swimming or a beach day Your hair behaves completely differently when you travel What's happening Low humidity, hard water, chlorine, salt, and UV exposure all either strip moisture from the strand or leave mineral deposits that stop moisture getting in. This is the type that has nothing to do with your products and everything to do with where you are. What helps A shower filter, if you're on hard water — this one change does more than most products A cap or a pre-swim rinse and leave-in before chlorine or salt water UV protection during sustained sun exposure A humidifier through dry winter months Anti-humidity sealers in very humid climates Regular chelating treatments to lift mineral buildup Type 03 Product-Induced Dryness The signs Hair feels coated but not actually moisturized More tangling, despite using more detangler Dryness noticeably worse after certain products Hair feels "producty" and brittle at the same time What's happening Some ingredients actively dry hair out over time. The usual culprits: drying alcohols like SD and denatured alcohol, sulfates, silicones that block moisture when they aren't properly removed, and glycerin used in very dry air — where it will pull moisture out of your hair rather than into it. What helps A reset wash to clear everything currently sitting on the strand An honest audit of your labels for the ingredients above Fewer products, chosen more deliberately Watching how humectants behave for you season to season Clarifying on a regular schedule rather than only when things feel bad Worth knowing This is the fastest type to confirm. Do one reset wash and skip everything except a basic conditioner for a week. If your hair feels noticeably better, you found it. Type 04 Health-Related Dryness The signs Dryness arrived suddenly, with no change to your products It comes alongside scalp changes or increased shedding It lines up with a change in medication or health Nothing you apply externally makes any difference What's happening Hormonal shifts, medication side effects, nutritional gaps, and underlying health conditions all show up in your hair. When the cause is internal, no product routine can reach it — and continuing to layer more product on top usually makes hair feel worse, not better. What helps Speaking with a healthcare provider, particularly if shedding or scalp symptoms came with it Reviewing your diet for protein and essential fatty acids Discussing supplements with a provider rather than self-prescribing Being gentle in the meantime: minimal heat, minimal manipulation A note from us We sell hair products, so it would be easy for us to skip this one. But if your dryness came on suddenly and brought other symptoms with it, that's a conversation for a doctor, not a conditioner. Nothing on our shelf is the right answer here. Type 05 Structural Dryness The signs A history of colour, relaxer, or chemical processing Split ends and breakage Heat-damaged sections that never hold moisture no matter what Noticeably different textures in different parts of your head Chronically dry ends while roots feel fine What's happening The internal structure of the strand has been physically or chemically altered, and it can no longer hold moisture the way intact hair does. This is the type nobody wants to hear about, because damaged hair cannot be repaired. It can be managed, strengthened, and eventually grown out or trimmed away — but not restored. What helps Regular trims, on a schedule rather than when it gets bad Protein and moisture treatments kept in balance Bond-building products to support the bonds that remain Heat-free styling wherever you can manage it Protective styling to prevent further damage Deep conditioning with gentle heat A bigger cut, if the damage runs through most of the length ✦ ✦ ✦ Where to Start When You Recognized Yourself in Three of Them Most people read this list and see themselves more than once. That's normal, and it isn't a reason to overhaul everything at once. Work in order instead. Rule out the reversible causes first. Product-induced and environmental dryness are the two you can address in a single wash day. A reset wash and a look at your ingredient labels will tell you within a week whether either was the real culprit. There's no point building a moisture routine on top of buildup. Then treat porosity as your baseline. Porosity isn't a problem to solve so much as a setting to work with, and it shapes every other decision you make. If dryness persists after you've cleared buildup and adjusted for your climate, this is almost always what's left. Manage structural dryness separately. Damaged lengths won't respond the way healthy new growth does, no matter how good the routine is. Treat those sections gently, keep up with trims, and judge your routine by how your newer growth behaves. And if your dryness arrived suddenly alongside shedding, scalp changes, or a change in medication, that's worth raising with a healthcare provider rather than a new conditioner. Understanding Hair Porosity vs Hair Density - Inhairitance Curl Spa

Understanding Hair Porosity vs Hair Density

Understanding Hair Porosity and Density: Finding Your Perfect Curl Care Match Hair care isn't one-size-fits-all, and nothing proves this more than when your friend's "holy grail" product falls flat on your curls. Why does this happen? The answer lies in understanding two critical hair characteristics: hair porosity and hair density. Porosity vs. Density: What's the Difference? Hair porosity refers to your hair's ability to absorb and retain moisture. It's determined by how your cuticles (the protective outer layer of your hair shaft) lie: Low porosity hair has tightly closed cuticles that resist moisture absorption Medium porosity hair has slightly raised cuticles that allow balanced moisture absorption High porosity hair has lifted or damaged cuticles that quickly absorb moisture but struggle to retain it Hair density, on the other hand, refers to how many hair strands you have per square inch on your scalp: Low density hair appears thin with visible scalp Medium density hair balances coverage without excessive weight High density hair provides full coverage with no visible scalp and often feels thick Why These Differences Matter When you use products formulated for the wrong porosity or density, you might experience: Buildup and weighed-down curls Excessive dryness or frizz Limp curls lacking definition Overly crunchy or sticky texture This explains why your friend's miracle product might leave your curls looking less than stellar. Your unique combination of porosity and density requires specifically formulated products for optimal results. Clarifying vs Detoxing: What's the Difference? - Inhairitance Curl Spa

Clarifying vs Detoxing: What's the Difference?

Raise your hand if you've been here before: You just washed your curls but they still feel... blah. No bounce, no definition, and your holy grail products suddenly seem to be ghosting you. Trust us Curl Babes, we've been there, too! When our curls start acting up like this, it's usually because they're begging for more than just our regular wash routine – they're screaming for either clarifying or detoxing. And yes, there's a BIG difference between the two! Let's Break It Down: Clarifying vs. Detoxing Many of us curlies throw these terms around like they mean the same thing (guilty as charged!). But they're actually two completely different levels of cleansing that do very different things for our precious curls. Clarifying: The Quick Reset Think of clarifying as the curl equivalent of clearing your phone's cache. Clarifying handles: That product buildup from all your styling favs (yes, that gel/cream/mousse cocktail you can't live without) Those oils your scalp produces (which are good! Just not when there's too much) The everyday gunk that comes from just living your life (pollution, dust, etc.) When your curls feel heavy and your wash-n-go has turned into a wash-n-NO, it's clarifying time! Our Curl Renew Shampoo is like your curl bestie here - it comes through to lift away all that surface stuff that's weighing your pattern down. This sulfate-free cleanser is gentle enough for daily use (necessary after swimming in pools and ocean waters). It is effective enough for your weekly cleansing ritual, removing heavy product residue and build-up without stripping the hair of its natural oils. Detoxing: The Deep Dive Your Curls Deserve Now detoxing? That's the big leagues. It's like when you finally clean under your bed after months (no judgment - we've all been there!). Detoxing tackles: All the surface stuff clarifying handles (so the buildup, oils, and daily pollutants) Those stubborn hard water minerals that literally stick to your strands (hello, calcium and magnesium) The deep-rooted gunk that's clogging your follicles and messing with new growth Scalp issues that can lead to irritation and flaking The pH chaos that has your curls unable to drink up moisture like they should For this level of clean, our Curl Renaissance Chelating Shampoo is the superstar you need. It goes beyond just your hair to reset the whole ecosystem on your scalp where healthy curls begin their journey. Your Scalp is the Real MVP We spend so much time obsessing over our curl patterns and porosity that we sometimes forget where it all begins: our scalps! Think about it: if you tried to grow a plant in coffee grounds and old takeout containers, would you be surprised when it didn't thrive? Your scalp is literally the soil where your curls grow! When that soil is clogged with product buildup, excess oils, or those sneaky hard water minerals, your curl garden can't flourish. When your scalp is congested, you might experience: Struggle sprouts: When follicles are clogged, new hair growth gets stunted before it even has a chance The forever itch: That constant irritation and flaking that no amount of scratching will fix Scalp drama: The natural balance of good and bad bacteria gets thrown off, leading to dandruff and other not-so-fun conditions Weak starts: Hair that grows from troubled follicles starts out compromised (and no amount of deep conditioning later can fully fix that) This is why regularly detoxing with our Curl Renaissance Chelating Shampoo isn't just about having a clean scalp—it's about creating the perfect environment for your curls to live their best life from root to tip. Your Curl Cleansing Game Plan Here's a quick game plan that keeps those curls popping year-round! Here's how to fit clarifying and detoxing into your curl life: Regular Reset (Weekly or every other week): Reach for that Curl Renew Shampoo to keep buildup from getting out of hand. Think of this as regular maintenance—like clearing your phone's cache before it starts acting glitchy. Monthly Deep Clean: Make a standing date with your Curl Renaissance Chelating Shampoo once a month for that deeper detox your scalp and curls need. This is your chance to hit that reset button and start fresh! Seasonal Curl Overhaul: When the seasons change, our hair faces new challenges (think: summer humidity, winter dryness, spring pollen). This is the perfect time to do a more intensive detox routine to prepare your curls for what's coming! Ready for a Total Curl Transformation? Join the Claim Your Inhairitance 30-Day Detox Challenge! 5 Signs Your Hair Needs a Detox - Inhairitance Curl Spa

5 Signs Your Hair Needs a Detox

In our quest for luscious, voluminous curls, we often overlook one crucial factor: the build-up of products, environmental pollutants, and natural oils that can leave our curly locks looking less than their bouncy best. Just like our bodies benefit from periodic detoxification, our hair needs the same care and attention. But how do you know when it's time for a hair detox? Here are five unmistakable signs that your tresses are desperately in need of a reset. 1. Product Build-up That Just Won't Wash Away You've noticed it – that heavy, slightly waxy feeling that persists even after you've thoroughly washed your hair. This sensation is a clear indicator of product build-up. What's happening: Regular shampoos simply aren't formulated to completely remove silicones, waxes, and oils that accumulate from curl creams, gels, and butters. Curly hair products tend to be heavier and more emollient, which means they're even more likely to build up over time. These substances create a coating on your hair shaft that repels water and prevents moisture from penetrating—something curls desperately need to maintain their spiral structure. The consequences: This build-up doesn't just weigh your curls down; it destroys their natural bounce and definition. Your expensive curl enhancers and moisturizing treatments? They're likely sitting on top of this barrier rather than nourishing your strands, leaving you with limp, undefined curls that clump together unattractively. 2. Dull, Lifeless Appearance Remember when your hair used to catch the light and shine? If those days seem distant, product build-up might be the culprit. What's happening: Healthy curls reflect light along their spiral pattern, creating that coveted dimensional shine and highlighting your curl pattern. When residue coats your strands, it creates an uneven surface that dulls this natural reflection and weighs down your curl pattern. The consequences: No amount of curl-enhancing products can truly restore your curls' natural bounce and luminosity when they're covered in residue. Your curl definition disappears, your curl pattern appears looser than it actually is, and that brilliant, multi-dimensional shine that makes curly hair so stunning becomes a distant memory. 3. Scalp Irritation and Flaking An itchy, flaky scalp isn't just uncomfortable – it's your body's way of signaling that something's wrong. What's happening: Curly hair care often involves infrequent washing and heavy use of leave-in products applied directly to the scalp. This approach, while moisturizing for curls, can lead to significant product build-up at the root. Combined with dead skin cells and excess oil, this creates the perfect environment for scalp issues. Your scalp's microbiome becomes imbalanced, leading to irritation, inflammation, and often visible flaking. The consequences: Beyond the immediate discomfort and embarrassment, an irritated scalp can actually impact curl formation right from the root. Hair follicles struggle to function optimally in an inflamed environment, potentially leading to weaker, less defined curls over time. And since healthy curls begin with a healthy scalp, this irritation can compromise your entire curl pattern from root to tip. 4. Your Hair Won't Hold a Style When your go-to styling routine suddenly stops delivering results, residue build-up is often the hidden saboteur. What's happening: Curl-enhancing products are specifically designed to interact with clean hair shafts, where they can properly penetrate the cuticle and support your natural curl pattern. When your strands are already coated with layers of previous styling products, new applications simply sit on top of this residue barrier rather than absorbing properly. The consequences: You'll find yourself using more and more product in a desperate attempt to revive your curls, creating even more build-up, and entering a frustrating cycle. Your curl definition becomes increasingly poor, with curls that appear stringy, frizzy, or simply fall flat. Your wash-and-go routine stops giving you those perfectly defined curls, and even your tried-and-true styling techniques fail to deliver the voluminous, bouncy results you once enjoyed. 5. Increased Hair Shedding Finding more strands than usual in your brush or shower drain? While some shedding is normal, an increase could signal that your follicles are struggling under the weight of build-up. Read our blog about the signs of hair shedding & what do do about it here.  What's happening: Curly hair is already more fragile than straight hair due to its structure, with each curl pattern forming a point of potential weakness along the shaft. When product residue and natural oils clog your hair follicles, they essentially suffocate the roots, creating an even more vulnerable situation. This creates an inhospitable environment for healthy curl formation right from the start of growth. The consequences: Over time, clogged follicles may lead to weakened curls that break more easily at their bends and coils, falling out prematurely and creating the appearance of thinning curls. This is particularly noticeable in curly hair, where each lost strand can affect the overall volume and fullness of your curl pattern dramatically. Many people mistakenly believe their curls are simply "changing" when in reality, build-up is preventing their true curl pattern from thriving. The Solution: A Proper Curl Detox The good news? These issues are reversible with the right approach to curl detoxification. Unlike harsh clarifying treatments that strip your curls of everything (including the natural oils your curly hair needs), a proper curl-focused detox: Gently removes build-up without disrupting your natural curl pattern Restores your scalp's natural microbiome and pH balance Creates the optimal environment for springy, well-defined curl formation Enhances curl definition, volume, and natural bounce Allows your curl-enhancing products to actually penetrate the hair shaft Introducing the Inhairitance Masterclass #2 Detox Challenge Ready to reset your hair and scalp health? How to Combat Winter Hair Shedding - Inhairitance Curl Spa

How to Combat Winter Hair Shedding

Hey Curl Babes! Noticing more strands shedding this winter? You’re not alone! Cold weather, dry air, and less sunlight can make your curls more fragile and for many of us winter can be a particularly challenging season.  We know how scary it is when you are taking out lumps of hair from your detangling brush.  Before you panic, let’s take a deep breath and break down why this happens and what you can do to protect your gorgeous curls. Why Does Winter Cause More Shedding? Dry Scalp & Lack of Moisture – Indoor heating & cold air zap hydration Cold air outside and heated air indoors zap moisture from your hair and scalp, leaving them dry and brittle. A dry scalp can lead to irritation, flakiness, and increased shedding. Less Sunlight = Less Vitamin D – A key nutrient for hair growth.Sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D, which plays a crucial role in hair growth. In the winter months, shorter days and less sunlight exposure can contribute to increased shedding. Seasonal Hair Cycles – Your hair naturally sheds more in colder months.Your hair follows a natural growth cycle. Some Curl Babes experience more shedding in the fall and winter as part of this cycle, where older hairs naturally shed to make way for new growth. More frequent Heat Styling – Can strip moisture & weaken curls.Using heat tools like blow dryers and flat irons more often in winter can cause damage and breakage. Extensions, weaves  and wigs: they are often coated with harsh chemicals & toxins, irritating hair and scalp So what do we do?  Here are our non-negotiables to keep your curls thriving during these winter months: How to Keep Your Curls Thriving ✔ Hydrate Your Scalp – by washing once a week and use lightweight oils like jojoba or argan on your scalp to lock in moisture.  ✔ Massage for Circulation –  Boosts blood flow & promotes growth. Super Effective and for Free99 . ✔ Use a Humidifier – Keeps moisture in the air & in your curls.  ✔ Gentle Wash Routine – Opt for hydrating shampoos like our Curl renew shampoo. Make sure to always use hydrating shampoo after exfoliating or chelating with Curl renaissance.  ✔ Protective Styles – stick to your own hair and avoid extension if possible.  These styles will then reduce exposure & prevent breakage. ✔ Eat Hair-Healthy Foods – Iron, biotin, omega-3s, and vitamins D & E.  ✔ Silk Pillowcases or Bonnets:i f it's not already part of your hair routine, now is the time to start. ✔ Gentle Detangling – this is the biggest opportunity for breakage and shedding. Stick to weekly detangling, opt for proven detangling tools such as the Denman brush or Tangle Teezer as well as your fingers while your hair is damp and conditioned. Be extremely delicate with your beautiful crown, she needs your affection right now.    Winter Hair Shedding is Real But with these simple tweaks, your curls will stay hydrated, strong, and thriving.  Be Patient Be patient with your hair, stay consistent with your Curl Care  routine, and most importantly, show your curls the love they deserve! 5 Ways to Reclaim Your Crown - Inhairitance Curl Spa

5 Ways to Reclaim Your Crown

Your journey to embracing your natural hair goes far beyond beauty - it's about honoring your ancestors' resilience, understanding your hair's unique scientific properties, surrounding yourself with positive representation and supportive people, protecting your rights in professional spaces, and most importantly, rejecting impossible beauty standards to celebrate your authentic self.

Through these five elements, you can reclaim your crown not just as a symbol of beauty, but as a powerful emblem of your heritage, identity, and self-acceptance. 1. Deny the Beauty Standard The beauty standard is an intentionally unattainable moving target designed to keep everyone, even those with Eurocentric features, perpetually chasing it. Your body and hair are not meant for others' judgment or pleasure, but rather are the sacred vessel of your soul and ancestral memories. To break free from these standards, consistently question your hair care choices to ensure they come from self-acceptance rather than others' approval, and invest in styles and products that prioritize your hair's health and natural beauty. 2. Spend Time With Your Hair Your hair is unique and deserves to be understood beyond its texture, requiring consistent care and attention to truly know how it moves and responds. Natural hair carries immense power and beauty that has historically been both admired and suppressed, making it essential to reclaim and celebrate it on your own terms. Understanding your hair's scientific properties and DNA, rather than just its appearance, allows you to care for it properly while embracing its inherent beauty. 3. Surround Yourself with Those Who Celebrate You Media powerfully shapes beauty standards, so it's crucial to surround yourself with content and people that genuinely celebrate natural hair, while being critical of false or harmful representations. Creating positive change means distancing yourself from those who make you feel insecure about your natural hair, as you need support, not additional obstacles, in embracing your authentic self. 4. Know Your Rights While Canada doesn't have a specific CROWN Act like some U.S. states, discrimination based on natural hair is illegal under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and victims have successfully won cases for such discrimination. If you experience workplace discrimination related to your natural hair, document any incidents, as you are legally protected and should never face professional penalties for wearing your natural hair. 5. Be Courageous You are descended from strong, resilient people who faced immense adversity to survive, and you embody their wildest dreams. By embracing and accepting yourself authentically in the face of difficulty, you not only honor their legacy but also empower future generations to stand taller and do the same. Are you ready to take the first step to reclaiming your crown?
