How to Combat Winter Hair Shedding

Hey Curl Babes! Noticing more strands shedding this winter? You’re not alone! Cold weather, dry air, and less sunlight can make your curls more fragile and for many of us winter can be a particularly challenging season.  We know how scary it is when you are taking out lumps of hair from your detangling brush.  Before you panic, let’s take a deep breath and break down why this happens and what you can do to protect your gorgeous curls. Why Does Winter Cause More Shedding? Dry Scalp & Lack of Moisture – Indoor heating & cold air zap hydration Cold air outside and heated air indoors zap moisture from your hair and scalp, leaving them dry and brittle. A dry scalp can lead to irritation, flakiness, and increased shedding. Less Sunlight = Less Vitamin D – A key nutrient for hair growth.Sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D, which plays a crucial role in hair growth. In the winter months, shorter days and less sunlight exposure can contribute to increased shedding. Seasonal Hair Cycles – Your hair naturally sheds more in colder months.Your hair follows a natural growth cycle. Some Curl Babes experience more shedding in the fall and winter as part of this cycle, where older hairs naturally shed to make way for new growth. More frequent Heat Styling – Can strip moisture & weaken curls.Using heat tools like blow dryers and flat irons more often in winter can cause damage and breakage. Extensions, weaves  and wigs: they are often coated with harsh chemicals & toxins, irritating hair and scalp So what do we do?  Here are our non-negotiables to keep your curls thriving during these winter months: How to Keep Your Curls Thriving ✔ Hydrate Your Scalp – by washing once a week and use lightweight oils like jojoba or argan on your scalp to lock in moisture.  ✔ Massage for Circulation –  Boosts blood flow & promotes growth. Super Effective and for Free99 . ✔ Use a Humidifier – Keeps moisture in the air & in your curls.  ✔ Gentle Wash Routine – Opt for hydrating shampoos like our Curl renew shampoo. Make sure to always use hydrating shampoo after exfoliating or chelating with Curl renaissance.  ✔ Protective Styles – stick to your own hair and avoid extension if possible.  These styles will then reduce exposure & prevent breakage. ✔ Eat Hair-Healthy Foods – Iron, biotin, omega-3s, and vitamins D & E.  ✔ Silk Pillowcases or Bonnets:i f it's not already part of your hair routine, now is the time to start. ✔ Gentle Detangling – this is the biggest opportunity for breakage and shedding. Stick to weekly detangling, opt for proven detangling tools such as the Denman brush or Tangle Teezer as well as your fingers while your hair is damp and conditioned. Be extremely delicate with your beautiful crown, she needs your affection right now.    Winter Hair Shedding is Real But with these simple tweaks, your curls will stay hydrated, strong, and thriving.  Be Patient Be patient with your hair, stay consistent with your Curl Care  routine, and most importantly, show your curls the love they deserve! Autumn and Your Curls

With  the fall and winter season come fresh new boots but also scarfs, hats, headbands, collars of jackets and coats that are constantly rubbing and tearing on our fragile curls. As you know the outer layer of your hair is made up of cuticles that are positioned like scales acting as your hairs protective shield. Constant tearing, pulling and rubbing as well as chemical damage such as coloring or heat can raise the cuticles and lead eventually to severe damage. These added challenges during fall and winter combined with intense temperature changes, from windy cold air to dry heated interiors definitely affect the health and hydration level of our curls. So what to do in fall and how to prep for winter? THESE 3 MUST-DO’S WILL KEEP YOUR HAIR HEALTHY AND HYDRATED: 1. Start regular Deep-conditioning and introducing treatments to your hair: If you haven’t been a fan yet, you will become one:  Regular Deep -conditioning treatments are key to obtaining healthy and bouncy curls. These power houses are packed with extra hydrating ingredients, intense nourishment and strengthening proteins. We absolutely  LOVE ;) Unconditional LOVE. This deep-conditioning hydration treatment delivers moisture in the core of your hair strand. Extracts of the “Rose of Jericho” are responsible for extremely long lasting moisture retention within the hair shaft and baobab protein deeply nourishes and repairs. Ginseng and Green tea strengthen the actual root of the hair and encourage new growth. For All Curl Types For Medium to High Porosity Curl Types For Low Porosity Hair Types Curl Tip: To re-create a salon Deep Treatment: Section your hair and apply deep treatment on soaking wet hair. Finger detangle the entire section. Twist this section and advance to the next. Once the entire head is covered and has been finger detangled and twisted, place your hair underneath a plastic cap and add some heat from a blow dryer and/or cover head under towel and let the treatment do its magic. Depending on your hair type and how much product you hair can support you can leave the conditioner inside or rinse it out a bit. For most curl types (except very fine and low density hair) it is safe to say that if you hair has absorbed the conditioner (when your hair is no longer white) you can just keep the conditioner inside and follow with the next step: Butter and/or Sealant. 2. Put that leave-in Conditioner to use! Even if you are not big on leave-ins otherwise, the fall season should be your motivator to start looking for a true CULRFRIEND! Once you found a great match for your hair you will never want to live without one! That leave-in conditioner is your go-to product during the week to rehydrate, refresh and revive your curls. Put that moisture back in your hair with a bit of leave-in before you go to bed for bouncy curls in the morning or revive and refresh them with some much needed hydration during your morning routine. Try these products and thank us later;) For All Curl Types For Medium to High Porosity Curl Types For Low Porosity Hair Types 3. Lock in that Moisture...always! This might maybe be the MOST important tip! So now you made sure that your hydration game is on point but in order to keep that moisture where it belongs (within your hair ☺), you need to make sure to lock it in! How do you that? You use an oil based sealant. All natural oils act as sealants, creating a shield around your hair cuticles.  Just imagine that hair oils and pomades are your winter coat for your hair. Just as you wouldn’t go outside without a jacket, you want to make sure that you hair is protected too! During fall and winter make sure to finish every curl routine with sealing in that moisture!!!!
